Get Into the Word:
"Therefore, I do not run without a definite goal; I do not flail around like one beating the air [just shadow boxing.]" (1 Corinthians 9:26, AMP)
Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20, CSB)
"For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time for us to do." (Ephesians 2:10, CSB)
Ponder the Word:
My four-year-old inched his way along the wall, intently listening to the teacher's instructions. I laughed aloud as it was obvious how much more intently he was listening than his track record of recent days on land would show. But this wasn't just any other setting; this was swimming lessons. He was in the deep end where following instructions was compulsory if he wanted to stay above water.
Where do you swim? In the deep? The wading pool? Somewhere in between? Dependence on the teacher quickly develops in deep water. In light of the "gold" — the imperishable crown of knowing Jesus, Paul says he does not run without a definite goal — the end toward which effort is directed.
Where are our efforts to be directed? On the great commission that requires the great commandments. Making disciples is the deep water keeps us dependent on our Teacher. Jennie Allen defines discipleship simply: "When someone who loves and follows Jesus helps someone else to do the same."
Without the latter — helping others to love and follow Jesus, we are without the mission that protects us from slipping defaulting to maintenance. As disciples of Jesus, we are called to mission.
The best preparation for making a disciple, is to be one yourself.
Talk to the Word:
HE: Heavenly Father, thank you for equipping me authority, the Holy Spirit and Your Word to make disciples. Thank you for the promise of Your presence with me always. You are worthy of my devotion.
ME: Grow my heart for your mission. I don't want to swim in the wading pool in maintenance mode. I want to know you, depend on you and experience closeness with you. Show me who I can help to love and follow you. Thank you for inviting me to be part of your mission . Deliver me from distraction and doubt. You have given me everything I need for life and godliness, including what I need to carry out your mission.
WE: Fill me with your Spirit so I can see what you see and hear what you hear. Empty me of my fear of the deep. You are there and you are enough for me. Show me the raw materials of my race and the passions, people and places I will intersect to make disciples.
Tune in next week as we unpack verse 27, "Qualified to Share the Gold."
Praying for you as you ask Him to show you where He is at work around you!
Only by grace,
Jesus said, "Apart from me you can do nothing," so we don't need to try! Deepen your dialogue with God over Scripture you read today, and any other day. Let it be the first conversation of your day, but not the only. If you need a place to begin, start with Ephesians 2:10.
