I Just Don't Know...

During a season of trial a couple of years ago, I remember lamenting to my mother about how I didn’t know what to do because I’d never been in this type of situation before. Her wise response was, “Be thankful because God is developing something in you that you currently lack. If you’ve never been in this situation before, it’s a good thing because God is bringing you one step closer to maturity.” I was so distracted by feeling overwhelmed and slightly sorry for myself, that I missed out on an opportunity to seek the Lord for more wisdom and to “count it all joy.” God was doing something new in order to bring me closer to maturity. I needed a retest with this reminder!

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds because you know the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete not lacking anything." (James 1:2-4)
When I was teaching, I would always test my students to determine whether or not they truly understood the concept we had covered. I tested them so both they and I would know where they were. If they didn’t pass the test, I knew we would need to go back and relearn the concept. If they did, I knew they were ready to move on.

Based on how you’ve responded in times of trial, testing and temptation, are you ready for the next assignment, or has God needed to take you a few steps backward and review some of the basics? Ask Him for His wisdom to be able to count your trials as joy, and for His perspective to see how He desires to bring you closer to maturity.

CONNECT: Lord, on my own I lack wisdom. Give me your perspective on my trials. Change whatever You need to in my life so that I don’t miss out on what You are trying to accomplish in me. Thank you that You are building perseverance in me and bringing me closer to maturity. Build into my life such a solid faith in You that when trials come, I cannot help but trust You.
